Omega-3 Supplements May Help More in Kids with ADHD Who Start Out Low in Omega-3s

This analysis combined results from seven clinical trials testing omega-3 supplements (like fish oil) in children and teens with ADHD, focusing on whether a child’s starting omega-3 levels affected how much they benefited.

Looking at all the studies together, omega-3 supplementation showed a small but statistically significant improvement in ADHD-related outcomes. However, when the researchers split the studies based on children’s baseline omega-3 status (measured through blood markers like EPA and DHA levels in red blood cells), a clearer pattern emerged.

Children who started with lower omega-3 levels showed a notably larger improvement from supplementation, while children with normal or unmeasured baseline levels showed no meaningful benefit. This suggests that a child’s starting nutritional status may help explain why some ADHD studies find omega-3 supplements helpful and others don’t.
