Higher Blood Omega-3 Levels Linked to Greater Muscle Loss Risk in Older Heart Disease Patients

This study looked at 95 adults over age 60 who had cardiovascular disease. Researchers used a simple questionnaire (SARC-F) to sort participants into those at higher or lower risk of sarcopenia, which is age-related muscle loss and weakness. They also measured diet quality, overall nutritional status, blood fatty acid levels, and markers of oxidative stress.

More than half of participants screened at risk for sarcopenia. Those at higher risk had poorer nutritional status and lower adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet. Interestingly, total blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids, especially plant-based ALA (C18:3 omega-3), along with trans fats, were higher in the group at greater sarcopenia risk, while saturated, monounsaturated, and other polyunsaturated fats did not differ between groups.

Statistical modeling showed that age, diabetes, poor nutrition, and elevated omega-3 levels were independent predictors of sarcopenia risk, while better diet quality and higher glutathione (an antioxidant) were linked to lower risk. The researchers noted that the omega-3 association was connected to diet quality and oxidative stress markers, suggesting a complex relationship rather than a simple cause-and-effect.
