Fish Oil May Help Offset Cholesterol-Related Heart Stress in Animal Study

This laboratory study used rats to look at what happens when a high-cholesterol diet is combined with fish oil supplementation. Researchers divided 80 rats into five groups: a normal diet group, a high-cholesterol diet group, a high-cholesterol diet plus fish oil group, a high-cholesterol diet plus the cholesterol drug atorvastatin group, and a comparison group. They then measured blood fats, inflammation markers, and markers of blood vessel lining health.

As expected, the high-cholesterol diet raised triglycerides, LDL, total cholesterol, and HDL, along with markers linked to heart strain, inflammation (like CRP and TNF), and blood vessel dysfunction. When fish oil was added to the high-cholesterol diet, many of these changes were reduced, with effects in a similar direction to the cholesterol-lowering drug atorvastatin, including lower markers tied to vessel lining stress such as nitric oxide synthase and VCAM.

The researchers concluded that fish oil’s fatty acid components appeared to support healthier lipid and inflammatory profiles in this animal model, and suggested fish oil could be studied further as a dietary approach related to cardiovascular wellness.
