A Young Athlete’s Fatal Heart Attack: Could Omega-3/Omega-6 Balance Have Played a Role?

This case report describes a 29-year-old competitive soccer player who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during a match. Doctors found a blocked artery in his heart caused by plaque buildup, despite the fact that he had none of the usual risk factors like smoking, high blood pressure, or diabetes.

When researchers looked for possible explanations, one key finding stood out: the athlete had a low ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids in his body. Prior research has suggested that people who eat a typical Western diet, especially athletes with heavy training schedules, often have lower omega-3/omega-6 ratios, and some population studies have linked this imbalance to increased cardiovascular risk.

The authors note that this single case cannot prove that the fatty acid ratio caused the heart attack, but they suggest it’s worth studying further, especially in young athletes who don’t fit the typical profile for heart disease.
