Blood Fat Molecules Called Eicosanoids Linked to Lung Function Patterns
Researchers looked at over 250 eicosanoids—signaling molecules made from fats like omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids—in blood samples from more than 3,300 adults enrolled in two long-running health studies (MESA Lung and the Framingham Heart Study). They compared levels of these molecules to lung function tests (spirometry) and lung imaging (CT scans).
They found that 51 of these molecules were statistically linked to lung function measurements, and 24 of those links held up in a second, independent group of participants. Some compounds derived from linoleic acid (an omega-6 fat) and other long-chain fatty acids were associated with patterns typical of obstructive lung conditions. Other molecules, including the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and stearidonic acid, were associated with patterns typical of restrictive lung conditions.
This was an observational, cross-sectional study, meaning it captured a snapshot in time and can show associations but cannot prove that any of these molecules cause changes in lung function.
