Higher Omega-3 Levels in Red Blood Cells Linked to Lower Rates of Obesity and Fatty Liver Disease
This study looked at blood samples from nearly 5,000 U.S. adults, measuring the pattern of fatty acids stored in red blood cell membranes—a marker that reflects a person’s fat intake and metabolism over the past few months rather than just a single meal.
Using statistical modeling, researchers identified several distinct fatty acid ‘patterns.’ One pattern, rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (like those found in fish oil), was associated with 26% lower odds of obesity. Among a subgroup who also had liver scans, this same omega-3-rich pattern was linked to 27% lower odds of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), a common form of fatty liver disease tied to metabolic health.
The omega-3 pattern was only modestly correlated with reported dietary omega-3 intake, suggesting that blood levels capture more than just what people report eating—possibly reflecting how the body processes and stores these fats over time.
