Omega-3 Fish Oil Extract May Help Protect Ovarian Tissue During Chemotherapy in Animal Study
This laboratory study looked at whether an intravenous omega-3 fatty acid preparation called Omegaven could reduce damage to the ovaries caused by procarbazine, a chemotherapy drug known to harm egg-cell reserves. Researchers divided 30 female rats into four groups: untreated controls, omega-3 only, procarbazine only, and procarbazine plus omega-3.
Rats given procarbazine alone showed fewer ovarian follicles, more inflammation and cell-death markers, more oxidative stress, and lower levels of AMH (a hormone used to estimate ovarian reserve). Ovarian tissue under the microscope also showed signs of cell damage typical of follicle loss.
When omega-3 (Omegaven) was given alongside procarbazine, these changes were less severe: inflammatory and oxidative markers were lower, tissue damage looked milder, and AMH levels rose compared to the procarbazine-only group.
What this means for you
This is early-stage animal research, not a human clinical trial, so it can’t tell us whether omega-3 supplements would protect fertility in people undergoing chemotherapy. It does add to a growing body of lab evidence exploring omega-3’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in reproductive tissue, but any real-world guidance should come from a physician, especially in the context of cancer treatment.
