Lower Blood DHA Levels Linked to Platelet Changes and Coronary Artery Narrowing
This study compared blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) in 183 people with coronary artery disease (CAD) versus 189 people without it. Researchers also measured platelet size markers, including mean platelet volume (MPV), which reflect platelet activity and clotting tendency.
People with CAD had significantly lower DHA levels than those without the disease. Lower DHA was associated with higher MPV and related platelet size measures, and these platelet measures were in turn weakly associated with more severe coronary artery narrowing (measured by the Gensini score). Statistical modeling suggested that MPV may partly explain the relationship between DHA levels and stenosis severity.
Over a follow-up period, higher DHA levels were associated with a lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, while higher MPV was associated with a higher risk. Patients with both high DHA and low MPV had the best outcomes in survival analysis.
What this means for you
This observational research suggests a statistical link between blood DHA levels, platelet size markers, and coronary artery disease severity and outcomes, but it does not prove that omega-3 intake changes platelet function or prevents heart events. It highlights an area for future research rather than a basis for treatment claims.
