Krill Oil Extract Shows Effects on Blood Vessel Flexibility and Platelet Function in Healthy Adults
This 12-week clinical trial looked at whether a concentrated Antarctic krill oil extract (called FJH-KO) could influence platelet function and arterial stiffness in 120 healthy adults. Participants were randomly assigned to take a low dose (375 mg/day), a high dose (750 mg/day), or a placebo.
Researchers measured how quickly platelets clumped together (platelet aggregation time) and used a test called brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (ba-PWV) to assess arterial stiffness. They also tracked several blood markers related to blood vessel lining health and clotting.
The high-dose krill oil group showed a meaningful improvement in the arterial stiffness measurement compared to placebo, along with changes in platelet aggregation time. A marker called P-selectin, linked to platelet activity, decreased within the high-dose group over the study period. The supplement was reported to be well tolerated by participants.
