Fish Oil-Based IV Nutrition May Help Protect Blood Flow and Organs During Severe Infection (Animal Study)
This laboratory study used a mouse model of severe bacterial infection (endotoxemia) to see how different types of intravenous fat emulsions—used in patients who can’t eat normally—affected blood flow to the gut and damage to organs like the liver and spleen.
Researchers found that the infection significantly reduced blood flow to the intestines. Only the fish oil-based emulsion, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, prevented this drop in blood flow. Fish oil also appeared to reduce liver damage in the infected mice, while soybean and olive oil emulsions were linked to more liver and spleen damage and higher markers of oxidative stress, even in healthy control animals at certain doses.
None of the lipid emulsions tested stopped the infection from causing enlarged liver and spleen. This study was conducted in mice, not humans, so the findings can’t be directly applied to people.
