Omega-3 Nutraceutical Blends May Calm Inflammatory Signals in Immune Cells
This laboratory study looked at how two omega-3-based nutraceutical blends, called Omega 3 Plus and Omega 3 Orange, affected human monocytes (a type of immune cell) grown in a lab dish. Researchers isolated monocytes from a healthy blood donor, exposed them to the omega-3 formulations, and then triggered an inflammatory response using a bacterial toxin (LPS).
Both formulations were well tolerated by the cells at the concentrations tested, with no signs of toxicity. When cells were pretreated with either formulation before being exposed to LPS, they released substantially less of several inflammatory signaling molecules, including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, with reductions of up to about 70%. A related inflammatory molecule called MCP-1 was moderately reduced, while IL-8 was barely affected.
One of the more notable findings was a strong reduction in prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), a compound involved in inflammation and pain signaling — up to 95% with Omega 3 Orange and about 80% with Omega 3 Plus. Neither formulation triggered production of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 on its own.
What this means for you
This is early-stage, cell-based (in vitro) research using cells from a single donor, so it cannot tell us how these formulations would affect inflammation in a living person. It does suggest interesting mechanisms worth exploring further in larger, controlled human studies before any conclusions can be drawn about real-world effects.
