Animal Study Compares Fish Oil, Krill Oil, and Algae-Based Omega-3s for Diabetic Nerve Damage

This laboratory study used rats with type 2 diabetes to compare several different omega-3 sources — menhaden fish oil, krill oil, algae-derived EPA and DHA, and pharmaceutical-grade EPA/DHA ethyl esters — to see how each affected nerve and blood vessel damage caused by diabetes.

Diabetes in these animals reduced nerve conduction speed, skin and corneal nerve fiber density, heat sensitivity, and blood vessel responsiveness by roughly 30-50%. When the animals were given omega-3 supplementation, EPA, DPA, and DHA levels rose in red blood cells, blood serum, and liver tissue, corresponding with improvements in nerve function and vascular reactivity.

Fish oil, krill oil, and combined EPA+DHA (whether from algae or ethyl ester form) all produced meaningful improvements across nerve and vascular measurements. Algae-derived or ethyl-ester EPA alone was the least effective option, while DHA alone came close to matching the benefits of the combined EPA+DHA treatments for several measures.

This early-stage animal research suggests that different sources of omega-3s — including fish oil, krill oil, and algae-based options — may support nerve and blood vessel health in the context of diabetes, with DHA-containing forms appearing particularly important.
