Krill Oil Reduces Fat Tissue and Liver Inflammation in Obese Mice
This laboratory study fed mice a high-fat diet for 28 weeks, with one group receiving added krill oil. Researchers measured fatty acid levels and inflammation markers in fat tissue (adipose tissue) and the liver.
Mice given krill oil showed higher levels of omega-3s (EPA and DHA) and related anti-inflammatory compounds, while levels of arachidonic acid and its inflammatory byproducts dropped. Fat tissue in the krill oil group showed more, but smaller, fat cells rather than fewer large ones, along with reduced signs of inflammatory cell clusters.
The krill oil group also had lower blood leptin, higher adiponectin, and improved insulin sensitivity markers compared to control mice. In the liver, krill oil reduced several inflammatory signaling pathways without changing overall liver tissue structure.
