Higher Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio in Blood Linked to Greater Risk of Death

This large study followed over 85,000 adults in the UK Biobank to see how the balance of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in their blood related to their risk of dying from any cause, cancer, or cardiovascular disease over time.

Researchers measured plasma levels of both omega-6 and omega-3 polyunsaturated fats and calculated the ratio between them for each participant. During the follow-up period, over 6,400 people died, including nearly 2,800 from cancer and about 1,700 from cardiovascular disease.

The study found that as the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats increased, so did the risk of all three types of mortality: all-cause death, cancer death, and cardiovascular death. This suggests that the relative balance between these two types of fats may matter as much as, or more than, the absolute amount of either one alone.

What this means for you

This research suggests that having relatively more omega-6 fats compared to omega-3 fats in the blood was associated with higher mortality risk in this large population, highlighting the potential importance of dietary balance between these fat types rather than focusing on omega-3 or omega-6 intake alone. As an observational study, it shows an association, not proof of cause and effect.
