Fish Oil’s Mixed Effects on Inflammation and Liver Fat in a Mouse Model of Aging-Related Inflammation
This study used mice genetically engineered to lack interleukin-10 (IL-10), a protein that normally helps control inflammation. These IL-10 deficient mice develop chronic low-grade inflammation similar to what’s seen in aging, making them a useful model for studying “inflammaging.” Researchers fed both normal and IL-10 deficient mice either a standard diet or one supplemented with fish oil (rich in EPA and DHA) for 90 days.
The fish oil supplemented IL-10 deficient mice showed a higher percentage of regulatory T cells, an immune cell type that helps calm inflammation, compared to their unsupplemented counterparts. They also had less fat buildup (steatosis) in their livers. However, these same mice showed increased levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of oxidative damage to fats, and lower vitamin E levels in the liver compared to normal mice, suggesting a more complex picture than simple improvement.
Muscle tissue examination showed decreased muscle fiber thickness in several groups, including those receiving fish oil, regardless of whether they were healthy or IL-10 deficient mice.
What this means for you
This early-stage animal research suggests omega-3 fatty acids may influence immune cell populations and liver fat in a specific inflammatory mouse model, but also points to some increased markers of oxidative stress alongside reduced antioxidant activity in the liver. These findings are exploratory, come from mice rather than humans, and should not be interpreted as evidence that fish oil treats or prevents any disease; further research would be needed to understand how these findings might apply to people.
