Can Omega-3s Support Nerve-Muscle Function? A Review of the Evidence

This systematic review pulled together 11 human studies to examine whether long-chain omega-3 fatty acid supplementation (EPA and DHA) affects neuromuscular function — the coordinated work between nerves and muscles that underlies strength, movement control, and resistance to fatigue.

Researchers looked at three categories of outcomes: neural measures (how nerves signal muscles), muscular measures (strength and contraction quality), and broader global measures of physical function. Across these studies, some improvements were reported with omega-3 supplementation, but results were inconsistent — many studies found no effect, and a few even reported negative effects in certain contexts.

The review noted that benefits seemed more likely to appear after roughly two weeks or more of supplementation, and that DHA specifically may play a role in nerve-related outcomes. It remains unclear how omega-3 supplementation interacts with structured exercise training, and the wide variety of study designs, doses, and measurement tools made it difficult to draw firm conclusions.
