Fish Oil May Help Counter Cholesterol-Driven Heart Risk Factors in Animal Study

This study used rats to explore how a high-cholesterol diet affects heart and blood vessel health, and whether fish oil could help offset those effects. Rats were split into groups: a normal diet, a high-cholesterol diet alone, a high-cholesterol diet plus fish oil, and a high-cholesterol diet plus the cholesterol-lowering drug atorvastatin.

Rats fed the high-cholesterol diet gained more weight and showed higher levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, and HDL, along with markers linked to heart strain, blood vessel stress, and inflammation (such as homocysteine, CRP, and TNF). These animals also had higher levels of substances tied to blood vessel lining dysfunction, including nitric oxide synthase and VCAM.

When fish oil was added to the high-cholesterol diet, many of these changes were reduced, with effects broadly similar to those seen with atorvastatin. The researchers concluded that fish oil components appeared to help moderate diet-induced changes in lipid levels, inflammation markers, and blood vessel function indicators in this animal model.

What this means for you
