Krill Oil Reduced Weight Gain and Metabolic Problems in Mice Fed a High-Fat Diet
This study looked at how krill oil affects obesity and related health problems in mice that were fed a high-fat diet for 12 weeks. The mice were given either a placebo, the diabetes drug metformin, or one of three doses of krill oil by daily oral dosing.
Compared to untreated mice, those given krill oil gained less weight and stored less body fat. Blood tests also showed improvements in markers linked to fatty liver disease, blood sugar control (glucose and insulin), and kidney function (creatinine and blood urea nitrogen).
Looking closer at tissue samples, the researchers found that krill oil changed the activity of genes involved in fat production in the liver and fat tissue, and appeared to reduce oxidative stress in the liver. Under the microscope, treated mice showed less fat buildup in the liver, less fat cell enlargement, and fewer changes in the pancreas and kidneys compared to untreated mice.
What this means for you
This is animal research, not a human clinical trial, so the results can’t be directly applied to people. It does add to a growing body of laboratory evidence exploring how compounds in krill oil might influence fat storage, blood sugar regulation, and organ health, which researchers may use to guide future human studies.
