Fish Oil Boosts Liver’s Cellular Cleanup Process in Alcohol-Exposed Rats

This animal study looked at how fish oil affects a natural cellular recycling process called autophagy in the livers of rats given an ethanol-containing diet. Autophagy is the process cells use to clear out damaged components and maintain healthy function.

Rats fed ethanol without fish oil showed signs of liver stress, including elevated liver enzymes (AST and ALT), higher levels of an enzyme linked to alcohol metabolism (CYP2E1), and increased inflammatory markers. Their livers also showed patterns suggesting autophagy was suppressed.

When 25% or 57% of the dietary olive oil was replaced with fish oil, these ethanol-related changes were reduced. The fish oil groups showed lower liver enzyme levels, less inflammation, and molecular signals indicating autophagy was more active, based on changes in a signaling pathway involving Akt and mTOR proteins.

What this means for you

This is an early-stage animal study, not human research, so it can’t tell us how fish oil affects people who drink alcohol. It does suggest a possible biological mechanism—supporting normal cellular cleanup processes in the liver—that researchers may explore further in future studies.
