Omega-3s May Boost Cancer Drug Effects and Reduce Side Effects in Lab Studies
This laboratory and animal study looked at how omega-3 fatty acids interact with rapamycin, a drug being studied for breast cancer treatment. Researchers used breast cancer cell lines and mice to see whether combining omega-3s with rapamycin changed how cancer cells used energy and whether it affected tumor growth.
The combination of omega-3s and rapamycin appeared to shift how the cancer cells processed sugar and other fuels, leading to increased cell death and slowed cell division in the lab and in mice. The omega-3s also seemed to counteract some of rapamycin’s known side effects, such as elevated triglycerides and cholesterol.
The researchers concluded that pairing omega-3 fatty acids with rapamycin might enhance the drug’s cancer-fighting activity while easing some of its metabolic side effects, based on these early laboratory and animal findings.

This is early-stage cell and animal research, not a human clinical trial, so it doesn’t show that omega-3 supplements treat or prevent cancer.
