Higher Omega-3 Levels and Vitamin D Linked to Better COVID-19 Outcomes
This study, called COMED, looked at blood levels of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA, DHA, and DPA, combined into a measure called the modified omega-3 index) and vitamin D in 160 people hospitalized with COVID-19. Researchers wanted to see whether these nutrient levels were connected to how sick people got, whether they needed hospitalization, how long they stayed, and whether they survived.
People with the highest omega-3 index levels (6.39% or higher) had noticeably lower odds of dying and lower odds of being hospitalized compared to those with lower levels, even after accounting for age, sex, weight, smoking, diabetes, and blood pressure. Higher vitamin D levels were linked to shorter hospital stays—by roughly 2 to 3 fewer days—compared to lower vitamin D levels.
Age remained the single strongest factor predicting death, severe illness, and length of hospital stay. Higher body weight raised the chances of severe disease, and smoking was linked to longer hospital stays.
What this means for you
This observational study found associations, not proof of cause and effect, between having higher blood omega-3 and vitamin D levels and somewhat better COVID-19 outcomes. It adds to a broader body of research suggesting these nutrients may support the immune system, but it doesn’t mean supplementing guarantees protection from severe illness—larger, controlled studies would be needed to confirm a direct effect.
