A New Algae Strain Rich in Omega-3s, Vitamins, and Antioxidant Pigments
Researchers identified and studied a new strain of microalgae called Vischeria magna, examining its natural content of fats, vitamins, and pigments. Using genetic and microscopic analysis, they confirmed it as a distinct strain and then measured what compounds it produces.
The algae accumulated notable amounts of lipids, with omega-3 fatty acids—especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)—making up the majority of its fatty acid profile (around 70-73%). It also contained vitamin A (retinol), vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol), vitamin C, and carotenoid pigments including astaxanthin.
The researchers also tracked how the algae’s growth stage affected these compounds. As the algae moved from active growth into a slower ‘stationary’ phase, its cells experienced more oxidative stress (lipid breakdown), which appeared to trigger higher production of vitamin A and vitamin E, likely as a protective antioxidant response.
