Higher Omega-3 Levels May Blunt Air Pollution’s Link to COPD Risk

This large study used UK Biobank data to look at whether omega-3 fatty acid levels in the blood changed how air pollution exposure related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) risk. Researchers followed over 82,000 nonsmokers, measuring blood levels of total omega-3 fatty acids and DHA, along with long-term exposure to air pollutants like NO2, PM2.5, and PM10 based on where people lived.

They found that people with lower circulating omega-3 levels showed a clear link between higher air pollution exposure and increased COPD risk. However, in people with higher omega-3 levels, this pollution-related risk was not statistically significant, suggesting omega-3 status may buffer some of the effect.

The researchers also looked at systemic inflammation as a possible explanation and found that part of the omega-3 effect appeared to work through lower inflammation levels, measured using an inflammation score. This suggests omega-3 fatty acids may influence how air pollution affects the lungs partly by reducing background inflammation in the body.

What this means for you

This observational study suggests that people with higher blood omega-3 levels may be less vulnerable to the lung effects of long-term air pollution exposure, though this doesn’t prove omega-3 intake prevents COPD—more research, including trials, would be needed to confirm a protective effect.
