A Screening Framework for Turning Algae into Safe, Practical Nutrition Products

This study introduces a modeling approach to evaluate whether algae — including microalgae and seaweed — could realistically serve as everyday sources of nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids. Researchers analyzed several commercially available algae products for their fat, pigment, polyphenol, and mineral content, and found that composition varied widely from one product to another.

Using this data, they calculated how much dried algae biomass (roughly 0.7 to 3.1 grams, depending on the product and age group) would be needed to provide 20% of a person’s daily target intake of alpha-linolenic acid, a plant-based omega-3. For some products, about 1 gram was enough to hit that mark. Combining multiple algae species improved overall omega-3 contribution while staying within safe intake limits based on trace element screening.

The researchers also looked at real-world seaweed consumption among Pacific Island children and found intake was infrequent and inconsistent, showing a gap between the theoretical potential of algae as a nutrient source and how often people actually eat it.
