EPA-Astaxanthin Ester Helps Protect Gut Lining Damaged by High-Fat Diet in Mice

This mouse study looked at a compound called eicosapentaenoic acid astaxanthin ester (EA), which combines EPA (an omega-3 fatty acid) with astaxanthin (a carotenoid antioxidant), and tested whether it could protect the gut lining from damage caused by a high-fat diet.

Mice fed a high-fat diet developed weight gain, unhealthy blood fat levels, colon inflammation, and a weakened intestinal barrier. When these mice were given EA, they showed less weight gain, improved blood fat levels, reduced colon inflammation, and stronger gut barrier proteins (ZO-1 and Occludin). Interestingly, these benefits disappeared in mice whose gut bacteria had been depleted, suggesting the gut microbiome plays a key role in how EA works.

Using DNA sequencing and gene activity analysis, the researchers found that EA reshaped the gut microbial community, increasing beneficial bacteria such as Akkermansia, Muribaculum, Parabacteroides, and Lactobacillus. EA also changed how the body handled cholesterol and bile, increasing levels of bile acids that activate a receptor (FXR) involved in gut barrier maintenance.

What this means for you

This early-stage animal research suggests that combining EPA with astaxanthin may support gut barrier health and healthy gut bacteria balance during high-fat feeding, likely through changes in bile acid metabolism. These findings come from mice, not humans, so more research is needed before drawing conclusions about people.
