August 2020 – Noncommunicable Diseases

The ALP Newsletter

Dear Reader,

We hope you are doing well and staying safe during these times.

This month we are focusing on Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) (e.g. Parkinson’s disease, autoimmune diseases, strokes, and most heart diseases, and more). The modern western type diet is characterized by foods high on the glycemic index and unhealthy fats (saturated and trans fats) not containing omega 3’s (Chaves, Singh, Khan, Wilczynska, Takahashi, 2018). The intake of this style of diet is associated with a higher risk of chronic diseases and non-communicable diseases. The omega 6/3 ratio associated with this type of diet ranges any where from 20-50 omega 6’s to 1 omega 3. The results of this ratio have devastating impacts on the human body. However, “It is possible that proinflammatory diets and inflammation in the tissue are the main issues for development of NCDs. New approaches including Mediterranean- type diets rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, canola oil, olive oil characterized with low ω-6/ω-3 ratio in the diet, may modulate inflammation and may be protective for body tissues” (Chaves, Singh, Khan, Wilczynska, Takahashi, 2018).

Therefore, we recommend you choose diet rich in Omega 3’s and continue your supplementation with ALP High-3 to reduce your risk of noncommunicable diseases.

Stay safe and stay healthy.

Sincerely,

Robert A. Barker, MD

The Big Three

Three scholarly research articles to further your understanding of Omega 6/3 Ratios and their roles in reducing Chronic Inflammatory Disease

Noncommunicable Diseases

The Western-type diet is generally proatherogenic characterized with energy dense, refined, ready-prepared foods with a high glycemic index and unhealthy lipids poor in ω-3 fatty acids, phytochemicals, and fiber. A high omega-6/omega-3 ratio, as found in today’s Western diets, promotes the risk of NCDs

Cardiovascular Diseases

In the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, a ratio of 4/1 was associated with a 70% decrease in total mortality. A ratio of 2.5/1 reduced rectal cell proliferation in patients with colorectal cancer, whereas a ratio of 4/1 with the same amount of omega-3 PUFA had no effect.

Cognitive Function in Bees

Bees fed an omega-6:3 ratio of 1, with 4% total lipid concentration achieved the best performance. Our results with honey bees are consistent with those found in mammals. Best cognitive performance is achieved by a diet that is sufficiently rich in essential fatty acids, but as long as the omega-6:3 ratio is not high.
