A Cleaner Way to Purify Phospholipids from Antarctic Krill Oil
This laboratory study focused on improving how phospholipids—the fat-like molecules that make krill oil unique—are separated and purified from crude Antarctic krill oil. Researchers tested a chromatography technique (a method used to separate mixtures based on chemical properties) to see if they could reliably increase phospholipid purity to pharmaceutical-grade levels.
Starting with crude krill oil containing about 58% phospholipids, the scientists developed a step-by-step process using ethanol and water as solvents and a specialized column material called ‘Diol’ to capture and concentrate the phospholipid fraction. After optimizing flow rates, loading amounts, and elution steps, they scaled up the process and achieved a final product with over 95% phospholipid purity, along with measurable amounts of EPA and DHA (the omega-3 fatty acids naturally bound to krill phospholipids).
The team reported an overall recovery rate of 81%, meaning most of the original phospholipid content was preserved through the purification steps. The authors note that commercial krill oil products currently vary widely in phospholipid content (30-60%), and this method offers a scalable, low-toxicity approach to producing a more standardized, high-purity concentrate.
What this means for you
This is a manufacturing and quality-control study, not a human health trial. It doesn’t test effects in people, but it matters because it shows a practical way to produce more consistent, higher-purity krill phospholipid material—something that could support better-quality supplements and more reliable research materials going forward.
