Can Omega-3 Supplements Help with Gum Disease Treatment?

General Wellness Immune System

This meta-analysis combined results from nine randomized controlled trials to see whether adding omega-3 fatty acid supplements to standard gum disease treatment (deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing) improved outcomes compared to the standard treatment alone.

Across the pooled studies, patients who took omega-3 supplements alongside their dental treatment showed slightly greater improvements in two common measures of gum health: probing pocket depth (a measure of gum pocket size) and clinical attachment level (a measure of how well gum tissue is attached to the tooth).

However, the researchers noted considerable differences between the individual studies, and when they applied the GRADE framework to assess the quality of evidence, they rated the overall certainty as low. This means the results are promising but not yet conclusive.

What this means for you

These findings suggest omega-3 supplementation might offer a modest additional benefit when paired with standard periodontal treatment, but the evidence is still preliminary. Larger, more consistent studies are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn, so this shouldn’t be viewed as a replacement for professional dental care or treatment advice.
