Can Vitamin D and Omega-3 Supplements Help Prevent Anemia in Older Adults?

Anti-Aging General Wellness Immune System

This study looked at whether taking vitamin D and/or omega-3 fatty acid supplements could lower the chances of developing anemia in midlife and older adults. It was part of a larger nationwide trial called VITAL, which tested these two supplements using a rigorous randomized, placebo-controlled design.

Researchers followed 839 participants from the Boston area who did not have anemia at the start of the study. They tracked hemoglobin levels over time to see how many people in each supplement group went on to develop anemia, comparing vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, both, or neither (placebo).

The idea behind the study is that certain types of anemia can be linked to low-grade inflammation in the body, and both vitamin D and marine omega-3 fatty acids have been studied for their potential roles in modulating inflammatory processes as people age.

What this means for you

If you’re an older adult interested in how nutrients like vitamin D and omega-3s relate to blood health, this study offers early data worth watching—but it’s a narrower ancillary analysis, so it shouldn’t be read as proof that supplementation prevents anemia. Talk to your healthcare provider about your individual iron, vitamin D, and omega-3 status.
