DHA Linked to Lower Rates of Combined Obesity and Depression in Large US Survey

Researchers analyzed data from over 4,400 US adults who participated in NHANES health surveys, looking at blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) alongside measures of central obesity (belly fat) and depressive symptoms.

They found that people with higher blood levels of omega-3s overall had lower odds of having both central obesity and depression together, particularly among women and older adults. When they looked at DHA and EPA separately, DHA stood out: higher DHA levels were tied to lower odds of central obesity, lower odds of depressive symptoms, and lower odds of having both conditions at the same time. EPA levels, on the other hand, showed no meaningful connection to any of these outcomes.

To explore why DHA might matter, the researchers used computational modeling to identify biological pathways related to inflammation (called TNF and IL-17 signaling) that DHA could influence. They then checked this idea against real blood markers and found that people with higher DHA had lower ratios of certain inflammatory blood cells to HDL cholesterol, hinting that inflammation could be part of the picture connecting DHA, obesity, and mood.

What this means for you

This large observational study suggests that people with higher blood DHA levels tend to have lower rates of central obesity and depressive symptoms occurring together, especially women and older adults, possibly related to DHA’s anti-inflammatory role. Because this is an observational snapshot in time, it cannot prove that DHA causes these differences, and the researchers themselves note that controlled trials are needed to confirm any real-world benefit.
