Engineered Gut Probiotic Designed to Produce an Omega-3 Anti-Inflammatory Compound Shows Promise in Mice

This laboratory study describes a new way to make resolvin E1 (RvE1), a specialized molecule derived from the omega-3 fatty acid EPA that helps the body resolve inflammation. Because RvE1 is naturally unstable and expensive to produce, researchers engineered a common probiotic strain, E. coli Nissle 1917, to manufacture RvE1 directly using two enzymes (COX2 and 5-LOX).

In mouse models of acute inflammation and colitis (an inflammatory bowel condition), this engineered probiotic was able to convert EPA into RvE1 inside the gut, persist there over time, and reduce markers of inflammation while helping restore balance to the gut microbiome. The researchers also tested using Euglena gracilis, a photosynthetic microorganism, as an alternative source of omega-3 fatty acids for the system, and found similar anti-inflammatory effects.

This is early-stage, preclinical research conducted in mice, not humans, and represents a proof-of-concept for a potential delivery platform rather than a finished product or treatment.

What this means for you

This research is exploratory and conducted in animals, so it doesn’t tell us how this approach would work in people.
