Eye Nutrients Plus Omega-3s May Sharpen Vision and Performance in Precision Athletes

Brain Cognition Eye Health General Wellness

This 9-month clinical trial looked at whether a daily supplement combining macular carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin) with omega-3 fatty acids could help athletes who rely on sharp vision, such as archers, shooters, and esports players.

Sixty-seven athletes were randomly assigned to take either the active supplement or a placebo. Researchers measured blood and skin carotenoid levels, visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, sleep quality, and performance during simulated competitions.

Athletes taking the active formula showed significantly higher carotenoid levels in blood and skin, along with better contrast sensitivity in dim lighting and improved sleep scores in some sports. They also performed better on certain sport-specific tasks, including shooting accuracy and reaction speed in esports players, compared to those on placebo.

What this means for you

For athletes in precision sports, this study suggests that combining macular carotenoids with omega-3s may support visual processing and some aspects of performance, though more research is needed to understand exactly how these nutrients work together.
