Fish-Heavy Diets and Omega-3 Levels Linked to Better Recovery After Atherosclerotic Stroke

This study followed 410 people who had experienced a large-artery atherosclerotic stroke, comparing those with a long-term coastal diet high in fish and seafood to those with a mixed inland diet lacking regular seafood intake. Researchers tracked recovery over one year, looking at disability scores, neurological improvement, depression, and cognitive function.

Patients with the fish-heavy dietary background showed better outcomes overall: lower disability scores, less chance of poor functional recovery, greater neurological improvement, and lower rates of post-stroke depression and cognitive impairment compared to those with the inland diet pattern.

In a smaller subgroup of 100 patients, blood testing showed that the fish-eating group had higher omega-3 fatty acid levels and a lower ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats. A higher omega-6/omega-3 ratio was statistically linked to worse functional outcomes, more depression, more cognitive impairment, and less neurological improvement over the year.
