Fish Intake and Metabolic Markers: Japanese Study Links Fish Metabolites to Better Blood Fats and Lower Blood Pressure
This study looked at over 1,000 Japanese adults to understand how eating fish and shellfish relates to markers of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions including high blood pressure, high triglycerides, and abnormal cholesterol. Researchers used detailed dietary interviews, urine and blood samples, and advanced lab techniques (NMR spectroscopy) to measure specific compounds linked to fish consumption.
They found that certain fish-related compounds—including urinary TMAO and taurine, and blood creatine and threonine—were higher in people who ate more fish. People with higher levels of these compounds tended to have lower triglycerides, lower blood pressure, and higher HDL (“good”) cholesterol.
Interestingly, the strongest associations were seen with raw fish and fish higher in omega-3 fats, while fried fish showed weaker or no significant links, suggesting that how fish is prepared may influence its metabolic effects.
