Gene That Boosts Omega-3 Levels Protects Mice From Obesity-Related Spinal Disc Damage
This study used mice genetically engineered with the fat-1 gene, which converts omega-6 fatty acids into omega-3 fatty acids inside the body, lowering the typical omega-6 to omega-3 ratio found in Western-style diets. Researchers compared these fat-1 mice to normal mice, feeding both groups either a standard diet or a high-fat diet rich in omega-6 fatty acids.
At 16 weeks, mice on the high-fat omega-6 diet gained more body fat and showed reduced disc height in their spines, a marker of intervertebral disc degeneration. Fat-1 mice gained less weight and had better-preserved disc height, with some differences noted between males and females.
By 60 weeks, regular mice on the high-fat diet had higher levels of inflammatory markers (IL-6 and IL-17A) in their blood and showed more fibrosis, cell loss, and disorganized tissue structure in their spinal discs. Fat-1 mice, despite eating the same high-fat omega-6 diet, were largely protected from these inflammatory and structural changes.
