Genetic Study Links Omega-6 Fats to Endometriosis and Infertility Risk in Women
This study used a genetic research method called Mendelian randomization to look at how naturally occurring differences in blood levels of polyunsaturated fats (like omega-3, omega-6, DHA, and linoleic acid) relate to several female reproductive hormone conditions, including endometriosis, infertility, PCOS, premenstrual syndrome, and premature ovarian insufficiency.
Researchers analyzed genetic data from over 115,000 people to see whether these fatty acid levels appear to influence disease risk, and also whether having these conditions influences fatty acid levels in the body (a ‘two-way’ analysis).
They found that genetically higher levels of linoleic acid and total omega-6 fats were associated with a modestly increased risk of endometriosis and infertility, while a higher ratio of polyunsaturated fats to total fatty acids appeared linked to lower endometriosis risk. In the reverse direction, having PCOS was genetically associated with lower DHA and omega-3 levels and a higher omega-6-to-omega-3 ratio.
What this means for you
This is genetic-level research, not a clinical trial, so it shows patterns of association rather than proof that changing your fat intake would change disease risk.
