High-Dose Omega-3 Early in Life Linked to Lower Childhood Asthma Risk
Researchers pooled data from 12 randomized controlled trials involving over 4,100 children to see whether giving omega-3 fatty acids early in life (during pregnancy, infancy, or childhood) affects the risk of developing asthma or wheezing.
When all the trials were combined regardless of dose, there was no overall difference in asthma/wheezing risk between children who received omega-3 supplements and those who didn’t. However, when the researchers looked specifically at higher doses—1,200 mg per day or more of total omega-3, or 1,000 mg per day or more of EPA specifically—they found a meaningful reduction in risk.
A further analysis testing for a dose-response pattern found a straight-line relationship: each additional 1,000 mg per day of omega-3 was associated with roughly a 26% lower odds of asthma or wheezing. This pattern held up across different countries, allergy risk levels, and lengths of follow-up.
What this means for you
This research suggests that the amount of omega-3 given early in life may matter more than simply whether it’s given at all—lower doses showed no clear benefit in this analysis, while higher doses were linked to reduced asthma/wheezing risk. The findings point to dose as an important factor for future research, but they don’t establish that any specific supplement prevents asthma in a given child.
