Higher Blood Omega-3 Levels Linked to Better Quality of Life in COPD Patients

Researchers followed 57 former smokers with moderate-to-severe COPD living in low-income communities for six months, measuring their blood levels of the omega-3 fats EPA and DHA at three separate visits rather than relying on diet questionnaires.

People with higher combined EPA+DHA blood levels tended to report better respiratory-specific quality of life, scoring lower (better) on the St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire, and had lower odds of experiencing a moderate COPD flare-up (exacerbation).

However, higher omega-3 levels were not significantly linked to other measures, including the COPD Assessment Test score, breathlessness scale, or severe exacerbations.

What this means for you

This observational study suggests a possible link between higher blood omega-3 levels and better day-to-day quality of life and fewer moderate flare-ups in people with COPD, but it cannot prove that omega-3s caused these improvements. The authors call for controlled trials testing omega-3 supplementation directly in COPD patients before drawing firm conclusions.
