Higher Omega-3 Blood Levels Linked to Lower COVID-19 Death Risk in Small Pilot Study
This pilot study looked at 100 people hospitalized with COVID-19 and measured their Omega-3 Index (a blood test showing the percentage of EPA and DHA in red blood cells) using stored blood samples taken at the time of admission.
Researchers then tracked who survived and who didn’t. Of the 14 patients who died, only 1 was in the group with the highest omega-3 levels (top quarter of patients), while 13 deaths occurred among the other 75 patients with lower levels.
After adjusting for age and sex, patients with the highest omega-3 levels had about a 75% lower likelihood of dying compared to those with lower levels. This result was a strong trend but didn’t quite reach the standard threshold for statistical significance, meaning it could be due to chance given the small sample size.
