Higher Omega-3 Levels in Blood Cells Linked to Lower Rates of Obesity and Fatty Liver
This study looked at fatty acid patterns in red blood cell membranes among nearly 5,000 U.S. adults, using a statistical technique to group 21 different fatty acids into broader patterns. One pattern, marked by higher levels of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, stood out.
Adults with higher levels of this omega-3-enriched pattern had notably lower odds of obesity and of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD, also known as fatty liver disease), even after adjusting for other factors. This pattern was also modestly correlated with higher reported dietary intake of long-chain omega-3s, suggesting diet may partly explain the blood levels observed.
A second pattern, featuring certain other fatty acids like linoleic acid, was also linked to lower odds of obesity and MASLD, though the omega-3 pattern showed the strongest and most consistent associations.
What this means for you
This research shows an association, not proof of cause and effect, between omega-3 fatty acid status in blood cells and lower rates of obesity and fatty liver disease in a large, representative sample of U.S. adults. It adds to a body of evidence suggesting that omega-3 status may be a useful marker of broader metabolic health, but it does not show that increasing omega-3 intake will prevent or treat these conditions.
