How Different Omega-3 Oil Sources Fed to Hens Change the Nutritional Quality of Eggs

This study looked at laying hens fed different fat sources — sunflower oil (control), flaxseed oil, hempseed oil, fish oil, or a microalgae blend — for 14 weeks to see how each affected egg quality and the fatty acid makeup of the yolk.

None of the oils changed how much the hens ate, how many eggs they laid, or their blood health markers. But the yolks themselves differed quite a bit: fish oil and microalgae raised DHA levels and improved a measure of egg freshness (Haugh unit), while flaxseed oil boosted ALA (plant-based omega-3) and produced the best overall n-6 to n-3 ratio. Hempseed oil was efficient at converting fed omega-3s into DHA in the yolk but slightly weakened the eggshell.

Overall, adding omega-3 sources to hen feed improved the nutritional lipid profile of the eggs without hurting the hens’ laying performance or health, with microalgae standing out as a strong way to increase yolk DHA specifically.
