How Omega-3s May Influence Aging: Clues from Genes, Gene Activity, and Gut Bacteria

This study didn’t run a new clinical trial. Instead, researchers combined three different types of existing data (called a “multi-omics” approach) to explore how omega-3 fatty acids might affect the biology of aging at a molecular level.

First, they looked at DNA methylation (a chemical marking system that turns genes on or off) in blood samples from newborns whose mothers took fish oil during pregnancy versus a placebo. They found differences in methylation on genes linked to aging-related diseases. Second, they examined gene activity in placental cells treated with fish oil versus soybean oil, finding shifts in gene expression patterns. Third, they used a genetic analysis technique called Mendelian randomization to test whether omega-3’s effects on blood lipids might work partly through changes in gut bacteria, including groups like Actinobacteria, Bifidobacteria, and Streptococcus.

Together, the findings suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may influence aging-related biology through multiple pathways: gene regulation (methylation), gene activity (expression), and the gut microbiome, rather than through just one single mechanism.

What this means for you

This is an early-stage, mechanism-focused analysis using existing datasets and computational methods rather than a new trial in people testing anti-aging outcomes directly. It offers possible biological explanations for why omega-3 intake has been linked to healthy aging in other studies, including a potential role for gut bacteria, but it doesn’t prove that taking omega-3 supplements slows aging in humans.
