Krill Oil Boosts Omega-3 Levels and Choline Recovery in Power Athletes
This 12-week randomized, double-blind study looked at 35 healthy power-training athletes who took either 2.5 grams of krill oil (providing 550 mg EPA/DHA and 150 mg choline) or olive oil placebo daily. Researchers measured blood omega-3 levels, choline, and antioxidant capacity before and after a demanding hour-long workout.
The krill oil group saw their HS-Omega-3 Index rise from about 4.8% to 6.8%, along with a large drop in the arachidonic acid to EPA ratio, a marker linked to inflammatory balance. Krill oil users also showed better recovery of blood choline levels between two back-to-back exercise sessions compared to the placebo group.
In terms of oxidative stress, total antioxidant capacity dropped by only 8% after exercise in the krill oil group, compared to a 21% drop in the placebo group, suggesting krill oil supplementation may help the body better handle the oxidative demands of intense training.
What this means for you
For athletes engaged in intense power training, these findings suggest that daily krill oil supplementation may help raise omega-3 status, support choline recovery between exercise bouts, and reduce oxidative stress after strenuous workouts, though more research is needed to confirm performance-related benefits.
