Krill Oil May Help Lower Cholesterol and Protect the Liver in Obese Mice

This laboratory study looked at whether Antarctic krill oil could help counteract the effects of a high-fat diet in mice bred to become obese. Researchers also used computer modeling to see how the oil’s components—EPA, DHA, and the antioxidant astaxanthin—interact with an enzyme called HMGCR that plays a key role in how the body makes cholesterol.

Mice fed a high-fat diet developed higher oxidative stress, more fat accumulation, and worsened cholesterol-related markers. When krill oil was added to the diet, these effects were noticeably reduced. The oil appeared to support healthier cholesterol processing by influencing several molecular pathways, including LDL receptor activity, HMGCR, and other proteins involved in fat and cholesterol regulation.

The researchers also tested liver cells in culture and found similar supportive changes in cholesterol-related pathways, reinforcing the animal findings.

What this means for you

This early-stage animal and cell-based research suggests krill oil’s combination of omega-3s and astaxanthin may influence pathways related to cholesterol balance and liver fat buildup, but these findings come from mice and lab models—not people—so more human research is needed before drawing conclusions about real-world effects.
