Krill Oil May Help Protect Muscle Health in Diabetes, Mouse Study Finds

This laboratory study examined whether krill oil—rich in EPA, DHA, phospholipids, and astaxanthin—could help protect against muscle loss (sarcopenia) linked to type 2 diabetes. Researchers used a mouse model of diabetes as well as muscle cells grown in a lab and exposed to high glucose and other stress factors that mimic diabetic conditions.

Mice fed a diet containing 1.5% krill oil for 24 weeks showed improved insulin sensitivity, lower blood sugar, and reduced markers of tissue damage compared to untreated diabetic mice. The krill oil group also had healthier intestinal lining function and lower levels of inflammatory compounds leaking from the gut into the bloodstream and muscle tissue.

In both the mice and the lab-grown muscle cells, krill oil was associated with less muscle wasting, reduced inflammation and oxidative stress, and better balance between building new muscle protein and breaking down existing protein. These effects appeared to involve specific cellular signaling pathways that regulate muscle protein synthesis and degradation.

What this means for you

These findings come from animal and cell-culture research, not human trials, so they should be considered early-stage evidence. They suggest krill oil is worth further study for its potential role in supporting muscle and metabolic health in the context of diabetes, but human studies are needed before drawing conclusions for people.
