Krill Oil May Help Protect the Liver and Spleen from Iron Overload Damage in Rats

This study looked at rats that were given extra iron in their drinking water for eight weeks, which is known to build up in organs and cause oxidative stress and tissue damage. After the iron-loading period, some rats were given krill oil for another eight weeks while others received no treatment.

Compared to untreated iron-overloaded rats, the krill oil group showed improved liver and spleen tissue structure under the microscope, lower levels of blood markers linked to organ stress (such as liver enzymes and ferritin), and higher albumin, a protein linked to healthy liver function.

Krill oil also appeared to rebalance oxidative stress markers in the liver and spleen and influenced several proteins involved in the body’s antioxidant response and tissue remodeling (Nrf2, HO-1, and MMP9), suggesting it may help the tissue adapt to iron-related stress.

What this means for you

This is an early-stage animal study, not a human trial, so it can’t tell us how krill oil would affect people with iron overload conditions. Still, it adds to a growing body of research suggesting krill oil’s omega-3 phospholipids may support liver tissue health under stress. Anyone with an iron-related health condition should talk to their doctor rather than rely on supplements alone.
