Krill Oil May Help Protect the Liver in a Mouse Model of Type 2 Diabetes
This study used mice with diet- and chemical-induced type 2 diabetes to look at how krill oil affects liver damage that often accompanies diabetes. Diabetic liver injury involves fat buildup, scarring, and inflammation in the liver, and can make blood sugar problems worse over time.
Mice fed krill oil showed lower liver enzyme levels in the blood, less fat accumulation and scarring in liver tissue, and reduced expression of inflammatory and fibrotic genes compared to untreated diabetic mice.
The researchers also looked at a specific type of cell damage called ferroptosis, which involves iron buildup and oxidative damage to cell membranes. Krill oil reduced markers of ferroptosis and boosted activity of NRF2, a natural antioxidant defense pathway in liver cells, along with lowering iron deposits and oxidative stress markers in liver tissue.
What this means for you
These findings come from an animal model, not humans, so they cannot confirm effects in people with diabetes. They do add to the growing body of research exploring how krill oil’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties might relate to liver and metabolic health, an area worth watching as more research develops.
