Lab Study: Omega-3 Fats May Slow Growth of Breast Cancer Stem-Like Cells by Targeting Fat-Making Enzymes

This laboratory study looked at breast cancer stem cells — a small subset of cancer cells thought to drive tumor growth and recurrence. Researchers found that these stem-like cells make and use much more fat than regular cancer cells, especially through an enzyme called SCD1, which produces monounsaturated fats, and enzymes involved in making arachidonic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid.

When the researchers blocked SCD1 using drugs or genetic silencing, the cancer stem cells lost much of their ability to renew themselves and grow. Human breast tumor tissue samples also showed higher levels of these fat-producing enzymes compared to healthy tissue from the same patients, with higher levels linked to more aggressive tumor grades.

The researchers then treated the cancer stem cells with the omega-3 fats EPA and DHA. This reduced the activity of the fat-making enzymes and slowed the stem cells’ ability to renew and multiply in lab dishes. In mice implanted with these cancer stem cells, dietary omega-3 supplementation also reduced tumor size compared to controls.

What this means for you

This is early-stage laboratory and animal research, not a human clinical trial, so it cannot show that omega-3 fats treat or prevent cancer in people. It does suggest a possible biological pathway — reducing certain fat-making enzymes — through which omega-3 fatty acids might influence cancer cell behavior, an idea that would need to be tested in human studies before any conclusions for people can be drawn.
