Omega-3 and Heart Rate Patterns in Kids with Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia
This study looked at children ages 12 to 16 who had a condition called inappropriate sinus tachycardia (IST), where the heart beats faster than expected without a clear cause. Sixty children were randomly split into two groups: one took an omega-3 supplement daily for three months, while the other received standard monitoring with no supplement.
Researchers used 24-hour Holter heart monitors to track heart rate and heart rate variability (a measure of how well the heart adapts to changing demands) before and after the three-month period. The children taking omega-3 showed a drop in both their maximum and average heart rates, along with improvements in several heart rate variability measurements.
The group that didn’t receive omega-3 showed no significant changes over the same time period. Researchers also noted that a majority of children in the omega-3 group reported meaningful improvement in their symptoms based on standard clinical scales.
