Omega-3 Fatty Acid May Support Gut and Ovarian Health in PCOS Mouse Model

This laboratory study looked at how an omega-3 fatty acid called eicosatrienoic acid affects polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in mice. Researchers used mice given DHEA to induce a PCOS-like condition, which led to a weakened intestinal barrier, lower levels of the gut hormone GLP-1, and ovarian inflammation.

The researchers found that treating these mice with eicosatrienoic acid appeared to help restore the intestinal barrier and reduce inflammation in the ovaries, suggesting a possible link between gut health and reproductive hormone imbalances seen in PCOS.

The study proposes that this omega-3 fatty acid may work by supporting gut barrier integrity and calming inflammatory signals that travel from the gut to the ovaries, though the exact mechanisms are still being studied.
